How to Pop Popcorn On the Stove or With an Electric Popper

For popcorn purists, nothing quite matches the flavor of popcorn popped on the stove top or in an electric popper. Follow these tips to perfect your skill at these traditional popping techniques.

Electric Popper or Stove Top

  1. Measure Carefully

    To make 8 cups of popcorn, measure 1/2 cup Orville Redenbacher's® Gourmet® Popping Corn and 3 tablespoons of Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping and Topping Buttery Flavor Popcorn Oil. Place in large, heavy-bottom pan. Cover and turn heat to medium.

  2. Let Off Steam

    If stove top popping, crack the lid to let steam escape during popping, so popcorn stays light and fluffy. And remember to always open the lid away from you to avoid contact with escaping steam.

  3. Shake While It Pops

    Shake the pan or popper to make sure every kernel heats equally. When popping slows down, remove from heat or unplug the popper.

  4. Salt After Popping

    If you like salted popcorn, we recommend using a fine-grained popcorn salt. It will cling to the popcorn better, so it doesn’t all end up in the bottom of the bowl!
